adore this product

Cleans excellently, smells great, is safe to eat off dishes washed in it. Never any film. No warnings on packaging that ingredients are skin and eye irritants – like every other automatic dishwasher product in super Stop n Shop in CT.

won't use anything else, evah!

Okay, seriously, I give a bag of smarty dish tabs to my relatives and friends for housewarming presents!! I have never experienced a film on my glasses nor dishes from this product, and it may be due to water hardness, as some suggested.

ALL others dishwasher cleaning products sold at Stop and Shop (I live in CT,) have WARNINGS on the label. Who would want to ingest food or beverages off of plates, cups, cutlery, etc, when washed with something to be a known skin and eye irritant??

I love the smell, I love the clean, I love the safety, of smarty dish automatic dishwasher tabs. The Stop n Shop near me stopped carrying it last week, and I told the Store Manager that I would start shopping somewhere else if he didn’t return it to the shelves. I also offered to do a free in-store product demonstration so more people could be smarty pants, like me, and pay the 5 bucks+ for 20 washes’ worth.

I was pleased

I’d been having a lot of trouble with my dishwasher having a nasty brown residue in the bottom. I’d run vinegar through, bleach, and it work help a little but didn’t solve the problem. I’ve been looking to replace the dishwasher, but in the meantime I needed something to use. I had been using the stuff from Melaluca. On a whim, I picked up a package of these. The tab wouldn’t fit in the dispenser, so I tossed it into the bottom.

I was stunned when I checked the dishes. Sparkling! What’s more, the brown gunk was largely gone. Every time I use these my dishwasher gets cleaner inside. I figured the issue was a worn out dishwasher, but now I’m not so sure. I’m also not so sure I need a new dishwasher!

I do have a water softener in the house and even so have experienced white residue with other detergents, but I’ve had no problem with white residue at all. I don’t know if it’s because I have the soft water or if it’s because I put it in the bottom. At any rate, I really like this product. I’m having trouble figuring out where I bought it, though. It’s not in my local Shop N Save …

If I could give this -5 stars I would. The first time I used the dishwasher tablets they left a white soap residue all over everything. I just used it a second time running in to set the dishwasher on a second rinse cycle after it was finished. EVERYTHING is coated with a white soapy residue that doesn’t even come off when I scrub it under running water. My dishes are dark blue so it really shows up. They look dirtier now than before they were washed! Now I am running the dishwasher a second time (almost third considering it’s already been double rinsed) just to try and get the soap residue off.

Love! Love!! LOVE!!!

I absolutely LOVE the tabs! I don’t know if it is just a combination of the machine I have and the water in my city in Arizona, or what. I read the bad reviews and can honestly say I’ve never had those problems. In fact, they even clean fantastically when the dishes are covered with dried-on messes. Imagine my dismay when I recently went to buy more, and the store only had the Smarty Dish Plus. Well, “plus” is a good thing, right? Holy crap!!! They sucked! They didn’t get my dishes clean (EVER!) and they left white spots all over everything. I haven’t been able to find the regular tabs anywhere since then, and was afraid they’d discontinued them. Because of that, when I happened to notice that Lowe’s had 7 bags and a “discontinued” price on them…yep. I just came home with 7 bags of tabs. Sure hope they don’t stop making these like they did the really awesome dish washing liquid. That would bum me out.

Soapy Residue

These things are terrible. First time I ran a cycle using these dishwasher tabs it left a white residue on just about everything that was in the dishwasher. The residue was so hard to get off I had to toss a few things because I couldn’t get them clean. I do not have this problem with any other brands.

Solve white film problem

For those with white film problems – vinegar is cheap and solves the problem, put a small bowl right side up on your top rack, add vinegar (1/4 – 1/2 cup depends on you water). {Remember this will be filled with water when the cycle is over, so don’t jerk out the top rack and get water over all your dishes}. Yes, citric acid is wonderful, but often hard to come by which means an investment.

I’ve used vinegar since the 70′s for this, long before I ever heard of Method. Rinse agents like Jet Dry were invented for this problem, it’s not a new problem that only happens with Method. If white film will send you back to Cascade or other hazardous brands of chemicals, you’ve consumed too many chemicals already, your brain isn’t working properly.

Why doesn’t Method add citric acid or something to keep this from happening? You’d have to check with them to be sure, but my first thought is why add something to the product that will increase the price that apparently not everyone needs. But, then my other thinking is perhaps it doesn’t work if it’s mixed in with the dish soap, just because some chemical products have a chemical that works when mixed in, doesn’t mean a natural product will.

If you have a problem with a product, contact the company. Any reputable company, like Method, would be happy to hear of any problems you are having so they can assist you and/or improve their product.

Finally, this is a great product, works well.

Excellent (& use HOT cycle)

Cleans really, really well, and the scent is great.

For those getting a white, chalky residue, try using a hotter cycle. When we wash on hot, our dishes come out sparkling.

Best of the greens

I’ve tried every chlorine-free, phosphate free dishwasher detergent that I can get my hands on and these are by far and away the best. I’ve read the other reviews, but I can say that I’ve never, ever had to wash twice or by hand, unlike with many of the other eco-friendly brands. I do rinse the dishes pretty thoroughly before I put them in the dishwasher, so maybe that helps? Regardless, I love these and will never go back to chlorine-based detergents OR have to try any other green brands.

I live in Arizona and we have very hard water and always had problems with dishes not getting clean in the dishwasher. Trying to be more earth friendly, I decided to try Method, Pink Grapefruit scented. Wow! This stuff can clean dishes! I had been adding vinegar to Cascade to get my dishes cleaner but no more! And the confirmation came this morning….. Last night when I loaded the dishwasher I realized I had only one Smarty left and just enough Cascade gel for 1 load. I decided to use the Cascade to get rid of the bottle under the sink and save the Smarty for tonight’s load. Well….opened the dishwasher this morning to find it full of gritty, cloudy, filmy dishes! Darn! Took out my coveted “last” Smarty and re-ran the dishwasher. One hour later – beautifully clean, sparkling dishes! I’m convinced!

Inconsistent results

I love that it’s unscented, and that’s why I use it. But I find that sometimes I have to rinse my pots and pans afterwards, and sometimes there is a white residue on my silverware after some washes, but not most of the time. It’s strangely inconsistent. Also the tablet is a bit big. A liquid version might be nice.

Update on the review below

Having read about adding citric acid to the wash I decided to try it. Finding it turned out to be a problem, nothing at any of the stores, so I ended up buying it on-line.

OK, WITH citric acid my dishes are once again sparkling clean. But my question, to other buyers and the METHOD people, WHY should i have to buy a 2nd product to make the Method Smartys work? WHY couldn’t Method realize that there would be hard water homes and have added the two spoonfuls of citric acid to the Smarty tablet themselves?

I don’t consider this a solution to the problem. I bought the citric acid because I didn’t want to be stuck with a bag-full of Smartys that were useless. So this will let me use them up without having gross dishes. But I won’t be buying more, unless they greatly improve the formula.

Not bad, if you don't mind washing everything twice

I love the method hand soaps, but maybe they should stick to liquid soaps. I’ve tried this 3 times now, and every time I’ve ended up with a load of dishes I had to wash by hand. It’s really bad. of couse you can only see it on clear, and colored items, like plastics, but if you rub what looks like a very clean piece of dishware with a dark dishcloth, sadly enough, the cloth gets a white film on it too. And I swear, I’m nothing near obsessive. I’ve got photos I’d show you but that’s not an option here. As to the people who are singing it’s praises here, I’m stumped. Maybe it’s got to do with WHERE we live and the type of water, (hard/soft), as to what kind of results you get. I do have hard water, no doubt about that. But I can use something like Cascade tablets and get excellent results. So I don’t know… I’m stuck with a bag of these tablets (minus 3) that I’ll never use again. Anybody want to buy it? Cleans great with a little boost

Since we’re trying to move towards less chemical and more natural cleaning in our house, we decided to give these a go (especially since the homemade dishwasher soap didn’t do so well). Well, I can’t say we were initially thrilled, because we saw the same white residue on our dishes that others are reporting. I wasn’t going to let that defeat me. I took what I learned from making my own dishwasher soap, and I threw a spoonful of citric acid in with the tablet when we did our next load. It was probably somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of a tablespoon (I just grabbed a dirty spoon out of the dishwasher to scoop it). Anyway, that load of dishes came out spotless. So, from now on, whenever we do dishes, we throw an extra spoonful of citric acid into the little soap door dealie and everything comes out clean – it even takes off the residue that the method tabs left the first time. We’re definitely happy (and our kitchen doesn’t stink like chemical perfumes when the dishes are done)!

White film

I wanted to love these. The grapefruit smelled great, but unfortunately these left a terrible white film ALL OVER that hand scrubbing still can’t entirely remove. I tried adding Jet Dry, but that didn’t help either. I like the other Method products I have tried, but I won’t be buying these again.

In Love

I have had my dishwasher for three years. I’ve used a dozen different dishwasher detergents/packs/tabs. While some cleaned my dishes great, I’ve had a nasty build-up on the bottom of my dishwasher for a while. Nothing touched it, dishwasher cleaner/baking soda/vinegar…nothing. I started using method smarty dish tabs for their all natural cleaning. I loved how clean my dishes came out, but a bonus came a few weeks later! By the end of the first pack, my residue was cut in half, by the end of the second pack, the residue in my dishwasher was completely GONE!!!! In LOVE! :) :) :)

Amazing product usurped...

The Smarty Dish tabs are an awesome product! Smarty Dish worked amazingly well in my old apartment with the old dishwasher there and WITHOUT Jet-Dry! Unfortunately, the manufacturers of newer dishwashers build them to optimally perform only with a specific brand of dish washing & drying agents. I purchased a home over the last year and have a new Whirlpool dishwasher and it’s Residue City all the way… I’ve been FORCED to used the manufacturers recommended products, otherwise i get horrific amounts of residue which has ruined my silverware and plastics while using ANYTHING other than their recommended products… Finish & Jet-Dry. Very disappointed that I can’t use my all-time fav METHOD SMARTY DISH anymore. :-(

Smarty Dish- not so smarty

They smell great, but the cleaning job they do- not so much. Keep trying Method! Also, if the tabs are too big for your dispenser tray, toss them in the bottom of the washer when the wash cycle starts! A no-brainer!! BTW- what is that white residue on my dishes??????

Feb. 1, 2012

At least two-times too big for new Whirlpool dishwashers

We just bought a brand new Whirlpool dishwasher and had our new bag of Smarty Dish dishwasher tabs ready to use. Much to our chagrin, the tabs are way too big! We are utterly shocked that the tabs do not fit! Whirlpool is one of the most popular, recommended, reliable and time-tested dishwasher brands and since the tabs only come in one size, we assumed the tabs would fit the smallest of the main dishwasher brands’ detergent trays. How did Method allow this design flaw? :’(

To add another kink, we cannot use powder as we have a septic, so now we’re stumped looking for a green, non-toxic liquid or tab alternative since Method was the only non-toxic Method doesn’t offer a liquid or smaller size tab. Does anyone have any recommendations to share?

New, energy efficient, dishwashers and many dishwashing tablets leave a nasty white film on glasses. Sometimes the glasses are permanently ruined this way. I had this problem. I got a lemon based cleaner for my dishwasher and glasses to remove most of this film and regularly use Smarty Dish tablets (placed inside my machine but not in the soap basket). I’ve tried a lot of different tablets and these are the only cleaners that really remove the white film and keep it off. I call that fantastic.

The Tabs Won't Fit

The tabs won’t fit in my soap dispenser so I don’t think they are living up to their potential in the dishwasher. Might want to reconsider this one, or offer a powder. Too bad, I was so excited to finally find these in my local store.

Not so smart...

I am normally a big fan of Method, but I recently tried the Smarty Dish dishwasher tabs, and they worked terribly. I don’t use my dishwasher (which is less than a year old) too often, but when I do, I expect great results. In the past I have used Cascade pacs, and my dishes came out very clean. I wanted to try something with more natural ingredients (plus I try to support green companies whenever possible), so I purchased Smarty Dish, even though they cost more. The first and only time I used Smarty Dish, all of my dishes were still dirty — the plates and utensils still had food on them, and the glasses were covered in fingerprints and lip marks. I had even pre-cleaned most of the dishes before loading the dishwasher. So instead of saving me the time of having to wash and dry my dishes, my workload doubled. I hope I can find my receipt so I can return this product. Very disappointed.

I can't get enough of this stuff

When companies stopped putting phosphorus in dishwasher detergents, the performance of the detergents went south! I tried so many with no satisfactory results. All products left that white gritty, chalky residue on my dishes with the worst being on my drinking glasses. I saw method pink grapefruit smarty dish tablets at my favorite hardware store and decided, “well what the heck” and threw them in the basket. I tried them on my usual nasty dishes that stack up in the sink over a couple of days (who am I kidding, 3 or 4 days) and was tickled half to death! NO white stuff on my dishes! Please don’t ever stop making these! I need to mention also that the fact y’all don’t test on animals is important to me. I am one happy customer!

I used to get mild white chalky residue on my dishes using other brands, but those films would rinse off easily. I tried these Smarty Dish tabs and now my dishes are permanently coated in this white film! I tried rinsing and then scrubbing with detergent to no avail! I am hoping the vinegar remedy helps. I have never been so disappointed. I have uploaded a photo of my ruined ladle on the Amazon product page for this item.

*sniff* --Won't fit

I’d love to use this — but the tabs won’t let me close the door. They’re too thick/deep. I have an almost new Kenmore. They recommended a popular commercial brand or 1/4 teaspoon of a powder. Found I couldn’t use Trader Joe’s house brand — too much soap in the formula gives the machine hiccups. Back to the commercial stuff. I’ve seen these all over & compared them to the what I’m using — which is small and barely fits as it is. Yours are too big [*sniff* *whimper*). Can you shave ‘em in half?

works great

I’m new to Method and just used the dishwasher tabs for the first time. I was skeptical b/c I’ve used liquid dishwasher detergent for years and have been happy with the results, though concerned about any chemicals left on every dish, glass, and piece of flatware that could be a health concern. So, I tried the Method tabs and everything came out of the dishwasher sparkling – really, actually sparkling. And, I don’t feel any rinse-agent-film. So glad I don’t have to worry about left-over chemicals to ingest. Thank you, Method!

Addendum to white film comments

When I made my original/previous post it was after using 1.5 bags of the pink grapefruit. I noticed a few comments about white film. …. and thought (??)

**Ironic, my recent load today had this film….BUT – please keep in mind I have been using this product for some time now with no white film.

So the first thing I did was…Check the Jet dry = it was almost empty.
I filled it up, ran the load again and ran one more load to make sure.

Came out squeaky clean.

(If it didn’t I would have thought it to be a possible batch or formula issue.)

Happy customer -

Awaiting some type of jetdry product from Method :)

After companies started taking phosphates out of their dishwasher soap, I kept finding horrible residue on my dishes after they were ran through a cycle in my dishwasher. It was disgusting! I searched for a solution online and found several people recommending Method dishwasher tabs for a better clean. It turned out to be the best advice ever! I LOVE the pink grapefruit smell and my dishes come out sparkling clean. I live in an apartment, so my dishwasher is pretty basic, no bells and whistles to speak of. With Method, even my wine glasses come out sparkling clean without streaks or residue. No need for any rinse aids or harmful chemicals. Now my whole family uses it! We’re all hooked on Method products for every part of our homes!

Tabs work great!

I use all the other Method products, but never the dishwasher tabs…until recently. I have always used a different store brand all my life but wasn’t happy about the bleach in it. I wasn’t sure how the tabs would dissolve, or if they’d work well, or even if it was cost effective to buy these pre-measured soap tabs…thinking i would use less with my old liquid. I was pleasantly surprised that these tabs work REALLY well. I never have residue on my dishes, or crusty food like i used to. I find that the package of tabs goes pretty quick though, and would like a larger bag of them, but all i like this product quite a bit. i get the non-scented b/c who cares if their dishes have smell on them.

I love the smarty dish detergent

I love the smarty dish detergent – pink grapefruit!!!! No residue or etching at all on any of my dishes, glasses or flatware!!!! It’s just the best. I was able once to buy it in bulk from Amazon (6 packages), but that deal seems to have disappeared. I wish it would return because I would definitely keep buying it. No store near me sells a comprehensive selection of Method products which can be frutrating! Keep it up, Method. I love all your products – glass cleaner, granite cleaner, body wash! Just wish I could locate them all in one place, or buy them consistently from Amazon in bulk! Maybe you can work on that one! More Pink Grapefruit, please!

I really had high hopes

I really had high hopes for the dishwashing tabs. I chose the Pink Grapefruit for my first purchase, and was excited to try them at home. I am SO DISAPPOINTED!!!. After the first use, i noticed a white film over everything: flatware, plastics, nonstick and glassware! So, I thought, maybe I should run a cleaning cycle on my dishwasher, and try it again. So I did that, but there was the film again. So, I thought (again) that maybe if I added some rinse aid, it would help with the filminess. I added rinse aid and tried another load. Guess what? ARGH! White film, white film, white film! I basically have to handwash everything after they’ve been run through the dishwasher to get this crap off. I guess this is $6.00 I’ll never see again. I’ve not yet tried any other products from Method, but if this is how their stuff works, I don’t think I will be. Bummer…

After they removed phosphates from dishwasher detergent, we tried everything to get the dishes clean with no luck. Wish there was a Method Liquid Detergent

I recently got my own place and decided to Method it out. I found these in my local grocery store and decided to try them out. I was not very impressed upon initial trials, (I’ve probably used half the package now) I’m wondering if it was because I had been forgetting to shut the detergent lid before washing or something, but I think that I have also had that residue mentioned by other people on my tupperware… Please come up with a liquid dish detergent.

The BEST Green Dishwasher Detergent I've EVER Used!

I have spent about a year trying lots of different “green” dishwasher detergents, and I’ve always ended up with the same results – dingy, white, dusty buildup that requires a vinegar load and some elbow grease to remove it. I figured I’d try the Method brand, and my expectations were low considering all the others I had tried. After ONE load, not only were my dishes clean, but all that white buildup was cleaned off! It was amazing! I find that it doesn’t etch my glass like other natural cleaners, and it even removes eggs that have been stuck on my pans from Saturday morning breakfast. Additionally, we’re a family of five, and we don’t have time for cleaning messes. I can just chuck one of the tablets in the dishwasher, jam it shut, and I know everything will come out clean.

I’m SOOOO happy to have found Smarty Dish. This is my product soulmate.

Thanks Method. I’m forever grateful!

works on stoneware

i love the unsented smarty dish tabs becuse i am a lazy dish washer. i even put my stone ware in the dish washer and you don’t want any sents used on stoneware becuse it will soak up the “purfume” and then leach it into your food. with the unsented tabs that is not a problem :D

Why, please???

For several years I used the Pink Grapefruit scented dishwasher tablets. They worked great. Unable to find these when I had run out I purchased the Unscented variety.
The first bag was fine but in using the second bag I started noticeing a waxy deposit on my stainless steel flat ware and my plastic storage items. Running them in the dishwasher a second time does not take it off. It takes cleansing powder and scrubbing to get this nasty stuff off. Is there a difference in the formula that is doing this or what? I really don’t want to go back to the awful product that is full of harmful chemicals that smell so bad.

Perfect for Bosch stainless steel dishwashers

We recently bought a house with a Bosch dishwasher that has a stainless steel interior. This was a first for us and the first time we ran it, we used regular, old run of the mill citrus scented automatic dishwasher gel. Yuckity, yuck, yuck! The rotting material, disgusting chemical, something-has-gone-horribly-awry smell that emanated from the dishwasher during and after the cycle completed was horrific. Not only did out kitchen reek when we opened the door, but all of our dishes carried the smell as well. I usually use all natural, non-scented, non-phosphorus continuing products except for the dishwasher, where I want a really good, sanitary clean (sorry 7th generation, but your automatic dishwasher gel blows). No matter what we tried, however, this dishwasher would emit a terrible odor and I thought we were going to have to replace it. Then, on a last ditch whim, I bought the scent free, method smarty tabs. WOW! No more disgusting smell AND my dishes and glasses are clean as can be!!! I don’t know why this is the only dishwashing detergent that our dishwasher can use, but I am so, so happy we found it!!! If you have a dishwasher with a stainless steel interior tub or you’re getting a weird odor using a phosphorus dishwashing detergent, I highly recommend the smaarty dish tabs!!! Saved our expensive dishwasher!

Not really non-toxic!!

I was anxious to try this product since I was told that it works well, and Method says that it’s non-toxic. Unfortunately, that representation appears false–according to the MSDS sheet for 2-methyloxirane; oxirane, an ingredient in the detergent:

“Probable human carcinogen. May alter genetic material. May cause impaired fertility. Human mutagenic data. Harmful by ingestion, inhalation and through skin contact. Serious irritant. Very destructive of mucous membranes”

OMG !!

This is the best dishwasher detergent I have ever used. I have tried a lot of brands trying to find the right one to clean my dishes, all the others i have tried left my dishes with a film and glasses very cloudy. Not this one.. Thanks so much for this product.. Keep up the good work.

Work great on ecowash cycle

I was having trouble with the ecowash cycle on my dishwasher. I’d put in a detergent tablet, turn it on, and wait. When the load was finished I’d find the tab somewhere in the dishwasher only partially dissolved.
I bought a pack of Method dish detergent on a whim and they work great! They dissolve all the way, leave my dishes spotless, and they smell like heaven.

My Dishwasher's Favorite Detergent

Our dishwasher kept on giving us dirty dishes. We offered it method’s dish washer detergent. No more dirty dishes! We’re never switching back. Now we love our dishwasher AND method’s dish detergent!

I too have to buy in bulk because no one around here sells it. It is by far the best dishwasher soap out there. I do not rinse my dishes before loading and I never have anything left after they wash. Its awesome. My dishes really sparkle, neverf any residue or undisolved detergent. I will never be without this. I like both the unscented and the grapefruit. Its a bit more expensive, but well worth the extra, not to mention the ease of use. I am glad to see they got rid of the big plastic container they used to sell it in, as it was wastefull and unrecyleable. The new heavy plastic zip bag is much better. I do have alot of the old plastic containers around the house that I use for all different things, as its a good size to store stuff in like in the junk drawer. also good to store cosmetics etc in as its the right size and keeps the moisture out. Never thought i would be so enthusiastic about a dishwasher detergent but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!

I couldn’t find these at my regular Target, but found them while running an errand at one in another town. I cannot believe how well they work. They do the job and leave even our stemware totally spotless. I couldn’t believe how well it reveresed the build up left by months and years of other products.

best dishwashing detergent

Due to important changes in what can go into dishwashing detergent my dishes, glasses, and silverware were getting covered in a grey/white haze. Who knows what that was? I bought these tablets on a whim because I love the handsoap and multi-purpose cleaners. One wash was all my dishes needed! I love how great they look AND that this product is not harmful to me or the environment.

Only Smarty Pants use Smarty Dish

Awesome product! So easy to just drop a tablet in dishwasher and walk away knowing that not only will my dish wear be sparkling clean but there’s no harmful products used during their wash. Do you know that using your typical store brand dishwasher soap leaves toxins on your plates so when you put hot food on them it reactivates it, therefore putting that mess into your body? NOT with Method products. I used to buy an expensive line of eco friendly products online and now all I have to do is go to Target or Bed Bath & Beyond to pick up my Method. Simple, inexpensive and this stuff WORKS!

Virgin Product

This was the first product that I used from method. OMG I couldn’t believe how great it cleaned and didn’t have the bleach smell in my drinking water anymore! This made me a convert and I started to try all the products I could get here in Canada. I’m converting everyone I know by giving them a few of the smarty dish tablets for them to try. Keep up the dirty work!

Love this product. I buy it in bulk because none of the Method suppliers around me carry it. Must try!

Works so well for dishes...

…who would have thought it would be fantastic at brightening clothes in the washer? I said goodbye to dirty bleach for good.

My favorite product in the line. I’ve tried several phosphate free detergents and none of the even come close to the cleaning power of this little monster!
