described by The Guardian as “the queen of prints,” Orla Kiely’s bold graphic patterns adorn her ready-to-wear clothing collections, house wares, furnishings, perfume and accessories. and now, you can also find them on a limited edition collection of method® hand wash, dish soap and all-purpose cleaner. exciting, isn’t it? we certainly think so.
also exciting was hearing from the Irish fashion designer herself about what it was like to work with method, how each pattern was chosen and what keeps her inspired. a big thanks to Orla and her lovely team.
the collaboration between our two brands feels like a natural fit. what made you want to work with method?
we love method’s eco-friendly philosophy and your fun, playful approach to tackling cleaning products! it was a pleasure working with the team for this range.
was there a highlight to the process for you?
choosing and developing fragrances is something so individual to the person, so we were so pleased that method really understood our taste for clean and natural fresh scents that matched our proposed prints beautifully. this made the whole process really enjoyable!
why did you choose these four patterns for the Orla Kiely + method collection?
it was important to pick four very different colorful, but classic, prints that would inspire four different fragrances, and work together as a collection as well as individually.
bringing the patterns to life through fragrance was a joy for us. is there one that you feel particularly attached to?
I love the bay leaf scent, which to me is the most fresh and herbal of all the fragrances in the range. teamed with our signature Stem Print, it just looks and smells great!
we’d love to hear more about how you work. what’s a typical day like in the Orla Kiely studio?
every day is different with so many projects going on at the same time! today, I have been planning new colors for our AW13 collection of bags and RTW; discussing a new opportunity for an interiors book; casting models for SS13 ad campaign and brainstorming idea’s to plan our SS13 short film that will be shown at new york fashion week, both of which will be shot in LA next week.
how do you stay inspired?
I like to keep up-to-date with exhibitions, cinema and flea markets. I love books, and have a wonderful library I’ve gathered over the years. I especially like vintage books on design from fashion to interiors.
Thank you for the great interview! I had no idea the Orla team had a hand in developing the fragrance as well. The pear ginger print and fragrance are to die for…I am sad it will only be available for a limited time.
Thanks for this interview. Loved hearing about her day and what keeps her inspired. I wonder how she got started?
