what’s so smart about laundry?

by annab, February 16, 2010

one of our unsung heroes here at method is fred. fred works on our formulations team, and not to brag or anything, but in his life before method, he developed the first oxiclean® liquid! we are lucky enough to have fred on our team now, and for the past year, he has focused solely on creating the stellar formula for our new laundry detergent. i sat down to pick his brain about what makes our formula better than the rest.

Q- hi fred! Method laundry detergent is here. how excited are you?
A- this project is the coolest thing i’ve ever worked on. now that  this ultra-concentrated detergent has rolled out, it seems the “ultra” theme keeps coming up - i’m ultra pleased that we’ve managed to make laundry ”handy”. the pump is ultra easy, just one hand to use. it’s ultra portable for folks on the go (even if it’s to your mom’s or the ’mat). we’re starting to see people blogging about how they have discovered that method laundry detergent eliminates the need for an extra product for those tough spots and stains. ultra effective! seriously, we’ve heard about grass, garage greases and oils, blood, ink and marker, and that’s just NOT your typical foodie stuff. so give it a go as your pre-treat strategy as well. what can method laundry detergent do for you today?

making life easier and greener, like that, gives me and all of us here at method the ultra satisfaction.

Q- what is so much “SMARTER” about method laundry detergent?
A- there are a whole lot of smart ideas in there, but i think my favorite is that the formula is more efficient at how it approaches the fabric and soil. it gets more work out of less material. so that means super clean clothes with less product than conventional 2x detergents. minimizing the requirement at the washing machine level has translated into minimization all along the packaging and supply line. less packaging, less energy into raw material and manufacture, less fuel and shipping, all equals less waste!

Q – what does ‘ultra concentrated’ mean?
A –it’s 8x!!!  our formula is 4x more concentrated than traditional 2x, and 8x more concentrated than old 1x formulations.

Q – how’d you make it so concentrated?
A – it wasn’t easy! quite a few man-years of development have gone into just investigating material functionalities and compatibilities for method® laundry detergent with smartclean™ technology. this detergent is pushing the limits of concentration, and that’s about all i can say here. the rest is covered in our patent application.

Q – how is it that such a little bit works?  and why does it work so well?
A – we redesigned laundry detergent so it works in a whole new way. getting your clothes clean requires cleaning agents (aka surfactants). surfactants bond to dirt and stains in the wash, lifting them up to be carried away by water.

traditional detergent’s cleaning agents are on the inside in little balls and water is on the outside. for those cleaning agents to work, the cells have to break open to release the surfactants, which requires agitation and time… and is a little hit-or-miss…. not all surfactants break through which means you use (and waste) more detergent than you really need.

our smartclean technology™ formula is designed to be inside-out with cleaning agents outside, water inside. this allows cleaning agents to get to work right away – once released into the wash, they’re like magnets immediately drawn to dirt and stains. and unlike traditional detergent, more of our cleaning agents are used. that’s why you can use so much less and still get a great clean!

Q- so now that you have revolutionized laundry what are your next plans fred?
A- it’s safe to say you’ll be seeing more news from method in the laundry aisle. stay tuned!

introducing the laundry revolution

by annab, January 10, 2010

big news, people against dirty! a new laundry day is dawning. we’re thrilled to introduce you to the world’s smartest laundry detergent: method laundry detergent with smartclean technology™. this revolutionary new detergent is powered by a patent-pending formula in a custom-designed pump bottle that will transform laundry as we know it. there’s no time like a new year and a new decade to say out with the big ol’ jug, and in with the new.

i sat down with drummond, our director of sustainability here at method, to discuss what makes this product so super duper sustainable.  here is what he said:

anna: what’s the problem with regular detergent (aka why should there be a war on jugs?)

drummond: the biggest problem is that the majority of the liquid in regular 2x detergent isn’t actually detergent. it’s water. which is a pretty silly thing to buy and carry around and pour into a washing machine. in fact, we think they should all change their name to ‘detergent infused water’. the consequence of all this detergent-infused water is that each year, tons and tons of excess plastic bottling and millions of gallons of water are shipped around the country, taking up space, wasting fuel, and making laundry into one heavy, drippy headache.

anna: so how did we address these problems when designing method laundry?

drummond: we thought there had to be a smarter way, and sure enough, our green chefs found the key.  they designed a high-powered, plant-based detergent to contain only the water needed to hold it all together, which means it is 4 times more concentrated than the plain old 2x stuff.  it’s so revolutionary, we are patenting this formula and are calling it smartclean technology.  the result is that load-for-load, method laundry with smartclean technology  uses 70% less plastic than the jugs, takes out all that excess water, and gets cleaning power into a handy, lightweight pump bottle.

anna: pump? why use a pump?

drummond: we also knew that the hard-to-read caps on laundry jugs mean most people unknowingly use far more detergent than they really need to, and worse yet, that the excess detergent doesn’t make clothes any cleaner, it just washes down the drain and out into the world.  so we tried an array of designs, and found that making an easy-to-use, no drip pump solved both the overdosing and the blue-tinted mess.  given how concentrated this detergent is, all you need is just a little amount – ¼ the dose of the leading national brand – so a pump also makes it easy to exactly measure out what you need.  no guess work or eye-balling!

thanks, drummond, that’s it for now! have a question that drummond didn’t address? ask it below. in the upcoming weeks we will take a deeper dive into the formulation, design, graphics and fragrance of our revolutionary laundry detergent.

eco wrapping

by danny, December 22, 2009

it’s believed that americans dispose of 25% more waste between thanksgiving and new year’s, with a bulk of that waste coming in the form of gift wrap paper, bows and cards.  while nothing says scrooge like handing a person a sweater, unwrapped, and proclaiming “happy holidays,” that doesn’t mean you need to resort to wasteful, unrecyclable gift wrap to contribute to the uptick in trash.

in my book Simply Green Giving, i came up with a handful of clever gift wrapping solutions that use recycled materials beyond just wrapping gifts in the sunday comics.  i wanted to use commonly found materials that were likely designated for the trash bin anyway, make it easy to execute, and have the end result  be something stylish and fun.  here are three of my favorites:

VHS RIBBON TAPE
here’s something that goes from obsolete to absolutely fabulous. just rip open an old VHS tape (we all seem to have a bunch, don’t we?), and use the shiny black ribbon inside for gifts. to make fancy, curly strands, just curl them against the blade of a sharp scissor.

BURBERRY-INSPIRED GIFT WRAP
rip open a brown paper grocery store bag and wrap your gift.  then use electrical tape in colors of red, white and black to create “stripes” around the box, replicating the famed  Burberry stripe pattern.

POTATO CHIP BAG GIFT WRAP (see image at top)

carb lovers, rejoice.  save those jumbo size bags of potato chips and use them to wrap gifts.    just rip open the bag so it’s one flat piece, and clean it with a little soap and water.  pat dry,    and wrap with the shiny, unprinted side on the outside of the gift.   nobody has to know you snacked your way through the holidays this year.  who knew going green could be, um, so tasty?

maybe we can’t all have our say at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, but keep the hope alive for a better future for our planet and a more sustainable way of life.

here are all three posters that we made for hopenhagen. pink, green and blue.

hopenhagen is change – and that change will be powered by all of us.

all I want for the christmas is...

by julie kim, December 14, 2009

i’m feeling pretty festive and am in the holiday spirit way more than i ever have been. i’ve had the “sounds of the seasons” soundtrack on repeat and have been loving every minute of it (next up, a charlie brown christmas, please). what kicked off this festive feeling in me was thinking of not only what i want to get my friends and family for the holidays, but what i want to get for myself. after all, i’ve been good this year and i'm rewarding myself, thank you very much.

all my gifts this year will have some element of being easy on the earth (eco-friendly, check), easy on the eyes (design-forward, check), or easy on the wallet (completely affordable, check). here are a few on the list:

o    clothing from Nau
NAU is an awesome clothing company that  creates sustainable fashion. Nau.com currently has a sales section with items as low as $18, which means it can also score in the easy-on-the-wallet department.

o    music from itunes

i love the internet (have you seen my title?). what i love even more is taking advantage of it to make my life easier and clutter-free. streaming music over itunes means less need to produce cd's which means less plastic in the world and less cd sleeves cluttering up landfills (easy on the earth, check). also, with the rise in online music stores these days, prices can be pretty competitive (easy on the wallet, check). it’s a win-win.

o    reusable shopping bags

living in San Francisco where plastic bags are banned, i’ve learned to carry around my own bags, especially when grocery shopping. whole foods has a nice selection of reusable shopping bags that are as low as 79 cents. and according to the whole foods blog, it also makes for a great way to wrap holiday presents!

o    KOR water bottle
KOR believes in water advocacy. KOR bottles are reusable, recyclable and BPA-free. using reusable bottles like KOR means less plastic water bottles littering up our landfills and less energy needed to bottle and transport bottled water across the world. they’re also designed in sleek, tall packaging. 1% of all sales are donated to non-profits dedicated to water-related issues. now that’s something to cheer about.

o    online holiday cards
sure, sending cards the traditional way thru the post office is nice, but sending your holiday greetings online through websites like hallmark or american greetings means less paper thrown out and less energy used to send mail all over the world during this holiday season. plus, most sites today offer up free services or cards as low as 99 cents each, meaning you can send your loved ones a personal greeting at a super affordable price.

can you add any cool holiday gifts to my list that meet the three requirements (eco-friendly, design-forward, affordable)?

soap makes hope

by rachel, November 19, 2009

on Dec. 7, world leaders from 192 countries will gather in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change Conference. the main goal of this meeting is to limit future carbon emissions and minimize the effects of climate change.

how would a tiny little soap company like method get involved in that?

as awesome as a company outing to Denmark would be (and to visit one of the world’s greenest cities for inspiration), we are supporting this landmark meeting of the minds by partnering with Hopenhagen, the people’s voice of COP15.

through the grassroots Hopenhagen movement, we have the opportunity to help connect a global community of people who want the same things we at method want – solutions to our existing environmental crisis, and a better, healthier future for us and our planet.

you know that method is in the business of creating change. our list of achievements in sustainability is long, from being a founding B Corporation to having the most Cradle to Cradle certified products of any company in the world. supporting Hopenhagen is another way we can use our loud and proud company voice to motivate and ignite action among our friends.

a few ways YOU can take action:
•    become a global citizen of Hopenhagen and sign the Climate Petition that will be presented to leaders at COP15
•    create a Hopenhagen passport on Facebook and utilize your social network to spread the good word.
•    enter the Hopenhagen Ambassador on HuffingtonPost.com for a chance to attend the conference in Copenhagen as a Citizen Journalist. all expenses paid to Denmark? yes, please!

don’t ever think that your voice is too small to make a difference.

which leads me to one of my favorite quotes (which I’m sure I’ve botched here):
“people should work together. take freckles, for example. if they all came together, they’d make a nice tan.”

and in the perhaps more prolific words of the Hopenhagen community:

“Hopenhagen is change – and that change will be powered by all of us.”

soapy song

by drummond, November 18, 2009

we thought it was time  to sing some praise for method’s unsung heroes:  our chemists, toxicologists and environmental scientists, or as we call them internally, our “green chefs.”

it’s usually only us scientists who sing about each other, and anyone listening quickly understands that one reason we are all in this line of work has nothing to do with our microphone skills.

method’s “green chefs” came to work here because of a shared passion to further the revolution in environmental product development.  by applying the concepts of green chemistry to product design, we can be certain we are using the safest and most effective ingredients available.

this is no easy task, particularly when designing cleaning products that don’t sacrifice performance for safety. lucky for us we have some of the best resources available to help. the material science research teams at EPEA in Hamburg, Germany and MBDC in Charlotte, North Carolina are run by Dr Michael Braungart and Bill McDonough, the guys who literally wrote the book on Cradle to Cradle product design. if you don’t know it yet,  Cradle to Cradle endorses design that considers the past, present and future of any product we consume. we work with EPEA and MBDC on an ongoing basis, and their researchers have assessed and approved every single ingredient that we use in our products. this is the most robust possible platform for designing effective products with built-in environmental intelligence.

there. all done singing!
