2013 is proving to be a big year for rudi becker. ‘the resinator’ (aka director of packaging) not only welcomed a second baby into his family, but he was also bestowed the prestigious honor of february employee of the month. rudi leads a team of packaging engineers at method and is the engine behind some of our coolest innovations, including our recent ocean plastic project.
congrats on being named employee of the month! you’ve been at method for a while now, right?
I have. I’ve worked at method for almost six years now. previously I worked for that other big cleaning company across the bay. a friend of mine was working for method so I came to check out the office. the next thing I knew, I was being interviewed. I loved the young, vibrant feel to the place. it’s such a different experience than other [consumer packaged goods] companies. and method is well-recognized in the packaging industry, so it’s exciting to be a part of it.
you lead the packaging team. what have you learned about managing people from working at method?
hiring is never easy, but for me, cultural fit is just as important as experience. if someone isn’t a good cultural fit, you can’t teach that. I’ve really focused on building a team that thrives on being part of the method culture and is kicks ass at developing beautiful packaging.
any other words of wisdom for the rest of us?
method is always changing, but you have a voice. you have to be your own advocate. but the most important thing for me is to have fun while you’re doing your job. I walk in the door everyday to give it my all, but I try to do it in a fun way. it’s good to be playful and take a chance.
your ‘perk of significance’ was cash for your new baby, jack. congratulations! how are you holding up with baby becker #2?
oh man, I’m tired. I’m definitely burning the candle at both ends right now. we have a lot of tiny laundry to do. It’s definitely easier the second time around. you know the milestones, which brings relief. and it’s really cute to see our four-year-old, holly, being so maternal. with jack, it feels more like a family now. it completes things in a way.
