lowe's road trip!

by annab, January 29, 2010

you might remember that we've been using biodiesel trucks to deliver method products to stores on the west coast. well, we’ve got news. that very same truck will be road tripping to select Lowe's stores in California over the next month.

the journey starts with Lowe’s in Chico this saturday (that’s tomorrow) where Lowe's employees will be handing out method laundry samples and showcasing our biodiesel truck. the truck will then drive to the Roseville store for the exact same event on sunday.

Chico: 1/30 (10am-4pm)

Roseville Lowe's: 1/31 (10am-4pm)

if you live in these areas, go ahead and check them out. if you send a picture to info@methodhome.com, we'll send you a free method shirt!

creative reuse

by annab, January 25, 2010

we are obsessed with beautiful examples of creative re-use.   can you blame us? when you have great package design, you want to reuse it.

the design team at Garcia Tamjidi realized this when designing the method offices, and they used clusters of our first dish soap bottles to create beautiful and unique chandeliers in two of our meeting rooms.

so, what do you think? have you seen any other great examples of creative reuse?

get a load of this- laundry carnival

by julie kim, January 15, 2010

if you haven’t heard by now, we’ve just launched our new revolutionary method laundry detergent with smartclean technology TM.  this product has been years in the making and almost every single employee played a part in its creation. with all the work we’ve put into developing and introducing method laundry detergent, we knew we needed to celebrate our new product in true method-style (if you don’t know what partying method-style means, check this out).

after putting our heads together, we decided to celebrate with a method carnival, our first ever!  cotton candy was served up by our “interknitter” (director of advocacy + interactive), games were dished out from “design intervention” and the “creative choregrapher” (2 fun ladies from our creative team) and beverages were poured from our own personal “call girl” (consumer response expert, sarah, who you may have spoken to) hand-in-hand with “the resonator” (director of packaging).  some lucky folks even got to walk away with prizes.  those that weren’t so lucky with the prizes walked away with official method laundry tube socks. because who doesn’t love to wear, and wash, tube socks?!

if you’re not in the know yet about method laundry detergent, be sure to check it out in all its glory at www.methodlaundry.com.

introducing the laundry revolution

by annab, January 10, 2010

big news, people against dirty! a new laundry day is dawning. we’re thrilled to introduce you to the world’s smartest laundry detergent: method laundry detergent with smartclean technology™. this revolutionary new detergent is powered by a patent-pending formula in a custom-designed pump bottle that will transform laundry as we know it. there’s no time like a new year and a new decade to say out with the big ol’ jug, and in with the new.

i sat down with drummond, our director of sustainability here at method, to discuss what makes this product so super duper sustainable.  here is what he said:

anna: what’s the problem with regular detergent (aka why should there be a war on jugs?)

drummond: the biggest problem is that the majority of the liquid in regular 2x detergent isn’t actually detergent. it’s water. which is a pretty silly thing to buy and carry around and pour into a washing machine. in fact, we think they should all change their name to ‘detergent infused water’. the consequence of all this detergent-infused water is that each year, tons and tons of excess plastic bottling and millions of gallons of water are shipped around the country, taking up space, wasting fuel, and making laundry into one heavy, drippy headache.

anna: so how did we address these problems when designing method laundry?

drummond: we thought there had to be a smarter way, and sure enough, our green chefs found the key.  they designed a high-powered, plant-based detergent to contain only the water needed to hold it all together, which means it is 4 times more concentrated than the plain old 2x stuff.  it’s so revolutionary, we are patenting this formula and are calling it smartclean technology.  the result is that load-for-load, method laundry with smartclean technology  uses 70% less plastic than the jugs, takes out all that excess water, and gets cleaning power into a handy, lightweight pump bottle.

anna: pump? why use a pump?

drummond: we also knew that the hard-to-read caps on laundry jugs mean most people unknowingly use far more detergent than they really need to, and worse yet, that the excess detergent doesn’t make clothes any cleaner, it just washes down the drain and out into the world.  so we tried an array of designs, and found that making an easy-to-use, no drip pump solved both the overdosing and the blue-tinted mess.  given how concentrated this detergent is, all you need is just a little amount – ¼ the dose of the leading national brand – so a pump also makes it easy to exactly measure out what you need.  no guess work or eye-balling!

thanks, drummond, that’s it for now! have a question that drummond didn’t address? ask it below. in the upcoming weeks we will take a deeper dive into the formulation, design, graphics and fragrance of our revolutionary laundry detergent.

method laundry- the evolution of design

by josh, January 10, 2010

hey people against dirty, i am method’s industrial  designer which means i am responsible for the design of our bottles. i start by taking pen to paper before i move to the computer. take a look at some of the early drawings for the method laundry bottle.  who knew these chicken scratches would lead to such a great product? me, that’s who!

in this sketch i started exploring the ways we could use an existing pump and change it so that it met our usability and durability requirements.

in this sketch i was thinking about the need for a cap to prevent accidental dispensing in transit, but in the interest of reducing packaging, and ease of use, we decided to do away with the idea and pursue a lockable pump actuator.

this is the first sketch where the cone first appeared.  i also worked out a scheme for the pump (shown in the middle in a sectional view). i then started to work out how to make the packaging feel like a robust laundry product.

combining all these sketched together this was the initial concept rendering for the packaging.

we are all excited to get this product into your hands! learn more here www.methodlaundry.com.
