method shiny suds video

by annab, November 25, 2009

We received a lot of feedback about our “Shiny Suds” video.

We understand the concerns associated with our video and have removed it from YouTube and all other controlled sources. This includes pulling the video and its corresponding comments from our blog. We are all for healthy debate, even when it’s not in favor of method, but when individual contributors begin personally attacking each other, we feel our blog’s purpose becomes unproductive.

Here at method, we are a group of women and men who care about our planet, but first and foremost about people. The purpose of this campaign was to raise awareness for transparency in cleaning product ingredients, to which we remain committed. It was not at all our intent to offend or promote any form of harassment.

We continue to learn, and we appreciate the fact that you took the time to reach out to us.

ETA - We have decided to remove and close comments from this post. Name-calling and dismissing people with different points of view does not help create understanding. We are grateful that commenters care enough to share their reactions and heartfelt convictions. To voice your thoughts and discuss with us directly, please email info@methodhome.com.

soap makes hope

by rachel, November 19, 2009

on Dec. 7, world leaders from 192 countries will gather in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change Conference. the main goal of this meeting is to limit future carbon emissions and minimize the effects of climate change.

how would a tiny little soap company like method get involved in that?

as awesome as a company outing to Denmark would be (and to visit one of the world’s greenest cities for inspiration), we are supporting this landmark meeting of the minds by partnering with Hopenhagen, the people’s voice of COP15.

through the grassroots Hopenhagen movement, we have the opportunity to help connect a global community of people who want the same things we at method want – solutions to our existing environmental crisis, and a better, healthier future for us and our planet.

you know that method is in the business of creating change. our list of achievements in sustainability is long, from being a founding B Corporation to having the most Cradle to Cradle certified products of any company in the world. supporting Hopenhagen is another way we can use our loud and proud company voice to motivate and ignite action among our friends.

a few ways YOU can take action:
•    become a global citizen of Hopenhagen and sign the Climate Petition that will be presented to leaders at COP15
•    create a Hopenhagen passport on Facebook and utilize your social network to spread the good word.
•    enter the Hopenhagen Ambassador on HuffingtonPost.com for a chance to attend the conference in Copenhagen as a Citizen Journalist. all expenses paid to Denmark? yes, please!

don’t ever think that your voice is too small to make a difference.

which leads me to one of my favorite quotes (which I’m sure I’ve botched here):
“people should work together. take freckles, for example. if they all came together, they’d make a nice tan.”

and in the perhaps more prolific words of the Hopenhagen community:

“Hopenhagen is change – and that change will be powered by all of us.”

soapy song

by drummond, November 18, 2009

we thought it was time  to sing some praise for method’s unsung heroes:  our chemists, toxicologists and environmental scientists, or as we call them internally, our “green chefs.”

it’s usually only us scientists who sing about each other, and anyone listening quickly understands that one reason we are all in this line of work has nothing to do with our microphone skills.

method’s “green chefs” came to work here because of a shared passion to further the revolution in environmental product development.  by applying the concepts of green chemistry to product design, we can be certain we are using the safest and most effective ingredients available.

this is no easy task, particularly when designing cleaning products that don’t sacrifice performance for safety. lucky for us we have some of the best resources available to help. the material science research teams at EPEA in Hamburg, Germany and MBDC in Charlotte, North Carolina are run by Dr Michael Braungart and Bill McDonough, the guys who literally wrote the book on Cradle to Cradle product design. if you don’t know it yet,  Cradle to Cradle endorses design that considers the past, present and future of any product we consume. we work with EPEA and MBDC on an ongoing basis, and their researchers have assessed and approved every single ingredient that we use in our products. this is the most robust possible platform for designing effective products with built-in environmental intelligence.

there. all done singing!

method clothing exchange

by rachel, November 13, 2009

our in-house attorney is super cute.

her name is allyson (that is her trying on shoes), and she’s smart and lawyer-y and all that important stuff. she also happens to be one of the most adorable dressers at method. last friday, she hosted the first method clothing swap. a group of method ladies emptied our closets of previously-worn favorites, and allyson transformed a conference room into a lovely secondh
and boutique. we snacked on brie and crackers, sipped sparkling wine and shopped the racks.

there were four rules:

1.    bring as little or as much as you want – and don’t limit yourself to clothes

(think: shoes, scarves, jewelry, belts, purses, umbrellas…)
2.    be willing to part with everything you bring (we’ll donate leftovers to charity)
3.    take as little or as much as you want – it doesn’t need to be an equal exchange
4.    wear something that makes trying on
easier

i scored an awesome pair of bro
wn cords. deena (creative team) took home the cutest white skirt, geetha (chemist) snagged a floral top. in fact, many of us are sporting new/old looks this week.

recycling is always in style at method.

tell us – has your family, group of friends or work place done anything unique and eco-friendly?

Meredith, our marketing analyst, scopes out the dresses.

welcome to art school

by annab, November 9, 2009

every other friday at noon, our employees gather in our lobby for method art school. stephanie and deena from our creative team lead the lessons.  they teach everything from drawing negative space, shading and volume, contour line drawing, gesture drawing, and still life drawing. each week is a new lesson, and many of us are not natural artists. i can vouch with some of my personal drawings.

some people might wonder why we would use company time to teach the finance or sales teams how to draw.  design is central to our products and company philosophy.  we think everyone at method can be a source of design inspiration and incorporate design into their job.

doing creative work requires problem solving and decision making. art school is a way of getting people within method who might not be in the “creative” field, like engineers, chemists, IT technicians and accountants to think like a designer and apply that design thinking to their area of expertise.

we think we can all benefit from a little design thinking!
